The first price of the last edition of the SmartCatalonia Challenge, endowed with € 5,000, was awarded to Smalle Technologies for the project ShieldForcis. This project is a global solution to control and protect port areas from marine pollution, mainly hydrocarbons, integrating a network of sensors, a containment barrier and a camera-based verification system. That novel approach would help to significantly reduce the effect of oil spills in ports dealing with heavy traffic.
The SmartCatalonia (or SmartCAT) Challenge is a strategy of the Government of Catalonia, which also includes a competition that promotes open innovation in order to solve municipal challenges in Catalonia. In the 2019 edition, the challenges were posed by Port de Barcelona. In this way, Port de Barcelona wants to use the proposed projects in order to increase its efficiency and to grow in a sustainable way.
The final of the competition was held on june 27th, in the Port de Barcelona reserved area within the framework of the SIL Barcelona Expo & Congress 2019 celebrated also in Barcelona. The CEO of Smalle Technologies, Héctor Martin, received the prize from Sra. Joana Barbany i Freixa, Director of Ministry for Digital Policy and Public Administration of Catalonia.
